Our Family History
Our founder, Lewis Kottler, first opened up a small store in the country village of Calvinia, in the Northern Cape, in 1888. But business was quiet, so he decided to move to the nearby bustling town of Oudtshoorn, which was then home to the ostrich farming industry. He made some very good contacts while he was there. With the growing popularity of ostrich feathers and ostrich goods he realised that he could introduce his wares to a wider audience in the cosmopolitan port of Cape Town.
So in 1896, Kottlers Curios opened its doors in Adderley Street, the main street in Cape Town. We operated from the same premises in Adderley Street for over 100 years, until a fire gutted the inside of the building and we were forced to relocate.
In 1976 Kottlers opened another branch in the world famous colonial Mount Nelson hotel in the Gardens. During this time we have had visits from international presidents, film stars, musicians like John Lennon and Royalty. As they returned each year on holiday, many of our customers have since become our friends.
